Legally, schools are allowed to prohibit access to certain sites they think are not suitable for students. My question is, How do certain sites get labeled inappropriate for student (and teacher) use? I choose Facebook as an example.Facebook, along with Myspace and others, are popular web sites used for social networking. These sites have many possible uses, socializing with friends being the primary one. The site itself allows different members to connect and exchange information, to communicate. There are various levels of privacy and publicity so that members can self-regulate. It seems to me that schools prohibit the use of such sites because they associate them with non-academic, silly playtime. They ignore, however, the possibilities for learning that are yet untapped.

However, depending on the privacy settings, this “catching up” might well be out there for the whole cyberworld to see. It feels so private, yet it can be so incredibly public. The Princeton University newspaper reported that graduate schools admissions offices admitted openly to checking applicants’ Facebook pages. I'm still not sure about this issue. Though the internet has secretly been used in the past by students to goof off, I think that sometimes it is still nessacary to use it. The question is; how often? I believe that whenever there is no other way to obtain the information, the internet is the perfect invention.

I would say that the role of computers at school is really to learn. If you think about it, besides public websites the internet can be used in many specific ways. For example, there are many websites that are made for children to practice math or spanish on. So again if it isnt pubic, its ok!

I think that it makes sense to block Some websites, but maybe not all. Sometimes I think that some websites are inappropiate for kids but some(or a lot) may be appropiate enoough depending on the school age group.

Also who's to say kids will go on sites like facebook and aim and not sites that can help them learn. I think that the role of internet is very important in schools these days. Many schools are going teach and posting things online instead of handing things out. Anyway, some sites that are blocked in my opinion are not that bad. Simple game sites like poptropica.com are blocked, but that is about cartoon characters that you play, and you earn medales. The board of ED should think about what they are blocking.
